Short description

Singer Tina Turner rises to stardom while mustering the courage to break free from her abusive husband Ike.

What's left behind the scenes

  • During the filming of the first domestic violence scene, Angela Bassett was injured. Falling from the high back of the sofa, she put her hands forward to cushion the impact and suffered a fracture in her right hand.
  • Actress Vanessa Bell Calloway played the role of Jackie, who shared Tina Turner's passion for Buddhism. As a devout Christian, she felt a certain awkwardness about having to recite Buddhist prayers during filming. Director Brian Gibson (1944-2004) allowed her to simply mouth the words rather than speak them, and the audio was later dubbed over the footage.
  • The house shown in Los Angeles – as well as the original furniture and decor – actually belonged to Ike and Tina Turner.

  • Laurence Fishburne turned down the role of Ike Turner (1931-2007) five times. He only agreed when he learned that Angela Bassett would be playing Tina Turner.
  • Angela Bassett simply lip-synced to the songs featured in the film. All the songs were performed by Tina Turner herself. According to Bassett, she can act and dance, but she has trouble with singing.
