Russell Crowe agreed to star in the film as a favor to director and screenwriter RZA, because he had previously given rap lessons to athletes from the Australian professional rugby team "South Sydney Rabbitohs," which Crowe co-owns.
It took RZA and Eli Roth over two years to work on the film's script, during which they refined every aspect of the plot and every detail of the weapons used.
The first assembly cut of the film lasted 4 hours. Director RZA wanted to split the material into two feature films, but co-writer and producer Eli Roth disagreed with this option.
