Short description

A young man, morally destroyed by his parents not loving him and by the fear of being not capable to make his girlfriend happy, rises on the ledge of a building with the intention of committing suicide. A policeman makes every effort to argue him out of it.

What's left behind the scenes

Instead of Richard Basehart (1914-1984), amateur actor Richard Lakowara was filmed in long shots on the ledge; furthermore, the ledge itself was slightly enlarged to minimize the risk of falling. Lakowara filmed wearing a canvas safety belt hidden under his clothes. However, even with the use of a double, Basehart still had to spend a total of over 300 hours standing almost motionless on the ledge over the course of 50 days of filming in New York. This was despite the fact that he had a leg injury and had recently suffered a burn after encountering poison sumac near his home.
