- Richard Barthelmess (1895-1963) had scars resulting from an infection contracted during plastic surgery. They could only be hidden with a thick layer of makeup, but Hawks convinced the actor not to wear any, as the scars suited his character. Additionally, he ordered that the character be made shorter in stature, which further emphasized his sense of inferiority.
- With the exception of the rain, the death scene of the character played by Thomas Mitchell (1892-1962) is an accurate reproduction of a pilot's death scene that Howard Hawks had once personally witnessed.
