When an armed, masked gang enter a Manhattan bank, lock the doors and take hostages, the detective assigned to effect their release enters negotiations preoccupied with corruption charges he is facing.

- Filming of the movie lasted only 39 days. Jodie Foster completed her role even faster – three weeks (21 days).
- At the end of the film, a friend of Denzel Washington’s character reads the book “Gotham Diaries,” a novel that Spike Lee co-wrote with his wife, Tonya Lewis Lee.
- As Spike Lee later recounted, while working on this film, he had no idea that the plot of another thriller – namely, John McTiernan’s “Die Hard with a Vengeance” (1995) – also takes place in New York City and is also centered around puzzles and riddles. Had he known, he would have cut all the riddles from the storyline of this film.

- According to director Spike Lee, he and Willem Dafoe ran into each other in the men's restroom during the intermission of the play 'Julius Caesar,' in which Denzel Washington was performing. While standing side by side, Lee mentioned that they should work together, and Dafoe agreed. Shortly after that encounter, Lee sent Dafoe the script for this film.

- The shootout between the police and the robbers was not in the original script. Spike Lee added it, deciding that a bit of action wouldn't hurt the film. The scene was filmed on the very last day of production, when the bank sets could finally be destroyed during the shooting process.
