Short description

Following the Civil War, headstrong rancher Thomas Dunson decides to lead a perilous cattle drive from Texas to Missouri. During the exhausting journey, his persistence becomes tyrannical in the eyes of Matthew Garth, his adopted son and protégé.

What's left behind the scenes

Screenwriter and author Borden Chase (1900-1971) objected to the use of six-shot revolvers, which she believed was historically inaccurate, but she was ignored.
Editing the film took nearly two years. The first completed versions were so poor that director Howard Hawks (1896–1977), in desperation, turned to Christian Nibe (1913–1993), his friend and an editor who was currently editing the film "The Air Pirates" (Raoul Walsh, 1948) at Warner Brothers studios. Nibe agreed that the versions of "Red River" were unusable, but he could not help his friend himself due to the terms of his contract. Hawks contacted Jack Leonard Warner (born Jacob Warner, 1892–1978), who had sailed to Europe aboard the transatlantic liner Queen Mary, and begged him to lend Nibe to the project. Warner agreed. From then on, Nibe edited "The Air Pirates" by day and worked on "Red River" by night.
