Short description

A River Runs Through It is a cinematographically stunning true story of Norman Maclean. The story follows Norman and his brother Paul through the experiences of life and growing up, and how their love of fly fishing keeps them together despite varying life circumstances in the untamed west of Montana in the 1920s.

What's left behind the scenes

For several years, Robert Redford persuaded Norman Maclean to grant him the rights to adapt his autobiographical novella for the screen.
Before filming began, Brad Pitt spent four weeks learning how to fly-fish. Since he was learning in Los Angeles, where there are no rivers, he practiced on the roof of a building.
Brad Pitt only landed the role of Paul on his second attempt. After the first audition, he decided he had performed poorly and insisted on sending the casting directors a recording of himself playing a different scene; it was only after this that he was cast.
