Short description

After his happy life spins out of control, a preacher from Texas changes his name, goes to Louisiana and starts preaching on the radio.

What's left behind the scenes

  • To complete the film, Robert Duvall (who served as lead actor, director, writer, and producer) paid $4 million out of his own pocket. The film earned respectable sums at the box office, and the distributors reimbursed Duvall for his expenses.
  • Robert Duvall wrote the entire screenplay by hand.
  • Robert Duvall offered Farrah Fawcett (1947-2009) a choice between two lead female roles. Initially, she chose the role of Tusya, but then she changed her mind and asked to play the wife. Duvall allowed her to play the wife, despite her initial choice. Miranda Richardson was then cast as Tusya, but Fawcett changed her mind once more and declared that she wanted to play Tusya after all. At this point, Duvall lost his patience and told the actress that she could either play the wife or not be in the film at all, and once again told her to choose. Fawcett chose the former.
