What's left behind the scenes
- According to Mark Wahlberg, Joaquin Phoenix immersed himself in the role before filming by vehemently cursing Robert Duvall. It got to the point where Wahlberg sometimes had to intervene.
- Christopher Walken was initially cast as Albert, but had to decline due to commitments to other projects. Robert Duvall was brought in at the very last moment.
- The film’s title comes from the motto of the New York City Police Department’s street crime unit, which was disbanded in 2002. During the opening credits, a patch worn by the unit’s officers flashes on the screen.
- While developing the car chase scene, director James Gray searched for fresh ideas by reviewing similar scenes in every film he could find—from silent movies to modern ones. Ultimately, he concluded that, as far as he could tell, no one had ever filmed such scenes solely from the perspective of one participant in the chase. That is exactly how he filmed the scene.
