Despite trying to keep his swashbuckling to a minimum, a threat to California's pending statehood causes the adventure-loving Don Alejandro de la Vega and his wife, Elena, to take action.
What's left behind the scenes
- When Rufus Sewell’s character has his polo mallet sharpened to wound Antonio Banderas’ character, it’s an indirect reference to the film “A Knight’s Tale” (2001), where the blunt tip is removed from the hero’s lance during a crucial duel, again featuring Sewell. Similarly, at the end of the film, Armand lectures Zorro about having “lost everything” for the sake of his mask; Sewell’s character says the same thing to Ledger when he is in prison.
