Short description

Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger's charm and audacity endear him to much of America's downtrodden public, but he's also a thorn in the side of J. Edgar Hoover and the fledgling FBI. Desperate to capture the elusive outlaw, Hoover makes Dillinger his first Public Enemy Number One and assigns his top agent, Melvin Purvis, the task of bringing him in dead or alive.

What's left behind the scenes

During the shootout at 'Little Bohemia' in the film, Nelson, Van Meter, and other criminals are killed. In reality, none of the criminals were killed; only Pete Pierpont was wounded (and was already in prison at the time). 'Little Bohemia' remains a shameful chapter in FBI history: all the criminals escaped, while the agents killed an innocent local resident and wounded several others; one FBI agent was also killed.
As a result of the writers' strike, director Michael Mann was able to attract Johnny Depp and Marion Cotillard to the project, as the projects they were filming at the time had been postponed.

The opening of FBI archives in the early 2000s (and the publication of Brian Barrow's book, 'Enemies of Society: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI') provided a new impetus for the film's creation.
