Short description
Ignacio, a disrespected cook at a Mexican monastery, can barely afford to feed the orphans who live there. Inspired by a local wrestling hero, he decides to moonlight as the not-so-famous Luchador "Nacho Libre" to earn money for the monastery -- not to mention the admiration of beautiful nun Sister Encarnación.
What's left behind the scenes
- During the filming of some action scenes, inflatable dolls were used to play the roles of spectators.
- One of the characters is named Chancho. From Spanish, it translates as "Pig." And the character Escuelto's name translates as "Skeleton."
- The working title of the project is "Toast."
- To a certain extent, the plot of the film is inspired by the story of Fray Tormenta (also known as Sergio Gutierrez Benitez), a Mexican Catholic priest who was a wrestler and used the money he earned in the ring to support an orphanage.
- The song sung by Jack Black's character was improvised.
- According to Jack Black, his stunt double Tom had never been a stuntman before. The filmmakers couldn't find a stunt double of the appropriate size and Tom happened to catch their eye completely by chance.
- Performing another dramatic entrance into the ring, Jack Black hit a chair hard. The result – a deep wound above his right eye and several stitches.
