Exploring every facet of ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic’s life, from his meteoric rise to fame with early hits like ‘Eat It’ and ‘Like a Surgeon’ to his torrid celebrity love affairs and famously depraved lifestyle, this biopic takes audiences on a truly unbelievable journey through Yankovic’s life and career, from gifted child prodigy to the greatest musical legend of all time.
What's left behind the scenes
- Daniel Radcliffe actually learned how to play the accordion. At first, he took lessons from a friend, and later from Yankovich himself on set.
- If Daniel Radcliffe had turned down the role, it would have been offered to Adam Driver.
- Initially, it was planned for Freddie Mercury to be present at the pool party, but the band Queen decided otherwise. It was decided to use John Deacon for filming this scene, which turned out even better, as he was the one who wrote the song “Another One Bites the Dust” from the album “The Game” (1980).
- Much of what is shown in the film actually happened. Yankovic bought his first accordion from a traveling salesman. He truly did record the single "My Bologna" in a bathroom, although this happened before he met the other members of his future band. This parody did indeed become an instant hit. During the performance of the parody "Another One Rides the Bus," Jon Schwartz actually used an accordion case as a drum, though, again, this occurred before Yankovic and Schwartz met the rest of the band members. From 1983 to 1996, Yankovic was indeed signed to The Scotti Brothers Records. Madonna herself actually suggested that Yankovic parody her 1984 hit "Like a Virgin." It is also true that radio host Barry Hansen had no children of his own.
- In a sense, “Weird Al” Yankovic chose Daniel Radcliffe for the lead role in the film because he heard his performance on “The Graham Norton Show” in 2007, when he performed “The Elements” (1959) by Tom Lehrer.
