Short description

Nothing gets between Anne Marie and her board. Living in a beach shack with three roommates, she is up before dawn every morning to conquer the waves and count the days until the Pipe Masters competition. Having transplanted herself to Hawaii with no one's blessing but her own, Anne Marie finds all she needs in the adrenaline-charged surf scene - until pro quarterback Matt Tollman comes along...

What's left behind the scenes

  • Filming of the picture began on December 13, 2001.
  • The rainbow that is visible behind Kate Bosworth at the end of the competition was real. Initially, they almost removed it during editing (it looked so striking and contrived), but they decided to leave it in because rainbows are quite common in Hawaii.
  • At the beginning of the film, a real surfer, world champion Tom Carroll, is shown – he plays the surfer with an eye injury. According to producer Brian Grazer, he received the injury right before filming, which made three actresses involved in the film (Kate Bosworth, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sano Lake) nervous, as they were about to go into the water. The moment Carroll received the injury was filmed, and Grazer used it in the film to emphasize how dangerous it was to go into the water and ride the waves.
  • During one scene where her character is undergoing training, Kate Bosworth briefly lost consciousness. Matthew Davis attempted to submerge his board vertically into the water, but it flew out of the water and hit Bosworth on the head as it fell. The actress was taken to the hospital as a precaution, where she was examined by doctors.
  • Michelle Rodriguez performed all of her jet ski stunts herself, including the moment when she tows a Kate Bosworth stunt double away from the shore.
  • For the competition scene, they filmed a professional male surfer dressed in a wig and bikini, and whose legs were shaved. However, during final editing, they replaced his image with Kate Bosworth using digital technology, so only the actor's legs remained in the film.
  • The rainbow visible behind Kate Bosworth at the end of the competition was real. At first, it was almost removed during editing (because it looked so striking and artificial), but they decided to keep it because rainbows are indeed frequently seen in Hawaii.
  • At the beginning of the film, a real surfer and world champion, Tom Carroll, is shown playing a surfer with an eye injury. According to producer Brian Grazer, Carroll suffered the injury just before this, which made three of the actresses in the film (Kate Bosworth, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sano Lake) nervous about going into the water. The moment Carroll was injured was captured on video, and Grazer used it in the film to emphasize how dangerous it was to enter the water and ride the waves.
  • In one of the scenes where her character is training, Kate Bosworth momentarily lost consciousness. Matthew Davis tried to plunge his board vertically into the water, but it flew out of the water and hit Bosworth in the head as it fell. As a precaution, the actress was taken to the hospital, where she was examined by doctors.
  • Michelle Rodriguez performed all her jet ski stunts herself, including the moment where she tows stunt double Kate Bosworth away from the shore.
