Short description
An uptight, conservative businesswoman accompanies her boyfriend to his eccentric and outgoing family's annual Christmas celebration and finds that she's a fish out of water in their free-spirited way of life.
What's left behind the scenes
- Throughout the film, Diane Keaton skillfully communicates in sign language, a skill she honed since her role in "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" (1977), where she played a teacher for deaf children.
- For several weeks before filming, screenwriter and director Thomas Bezucha rehearsed with the nine actors cast as the Stones so they could get to know each other well enough to convincingly portray members of the same family on camera. They also took an accelerated course in ASL (American Sign Language, used in deaf communities in the US and Canada), as eight of them had to communicate with Tadeusz or translate his statements. Although some critics, as well as the cast and crew themselves, admitted that their level of sign language proficiency was below average, the result was a fairly believable on-screen depiction of an average family forced, for obvious reasons, to use sign language.
