Short description

Little Fedor brings a cat to home despite his mother's distaste for cats. He runs away with his talking cat, to make more friends on the way.

What's left behind the scenes

Uncle Fyodor's Soviet parents in 1978 are very similar to the Swedish parents of the Little Boy in the 1968 cartoon "Karlsson-on-the-Roof".
At the request of director Vladimir Popov, the work of creating the on-screen images was divided among the production designers. Levon Khachatryan worked on the characters of Pechkin the mailman, Uncle Fyodor's Father and Mother, and Uncle Fyodor himself. Nikolay Erykalov worked on the animals: Matroskin the cat, Sharik the dog, Murka the cow, and her calf Gavryusha. The image of the Jackdaw took a long time to get right, so everyone who entered the artists' room at Soyuzmultfilm was asked to draw the Jackdaw. Even Leonid Shvartsman, the creator of Cheburashka, had a hand in its creation.
Writer Eduard Uspensky wanted to give the cat the surname Taraskin, after his friend Anatoly Taraskin from the "Fitil" film magazine, but Taraskin "didn't want to be some book cat." However, he later regretted this and admitted to the writer: "What a fool I was! I can't believe I begrudged him the name!"
In the summer of 1967, Eduard Uspensky worked as a librarian at a Pioneer camp. It was there that he began composing the story about the village of Prostokvashino and its motley inhabitants.
Levon Khachatryan based Uncle Fyodor's mother on his own wife. 'Short stature, short haircut, wearing glasses. Vladimir Popov made his own adjustments. The glasses. In my sketch, they were round, like the ones my wife wears, but Popov thought square ones would be better.'
Pechkin the postman looks very similar to Citizen Kurochkin from Vladimir Popov's cartoon "The Adventures of Vasya Kurolesov" (1981). This is further emphasized by the fact that both characters were voiced by the same actor, Boris Novikov.
The episode where Pechkin the postman knocks on the door and the Little Sparrow asks "Who's there?" is very similar to a corresponding episode in the American educational series "The Electric Company" (1971), where a plumber knocks on the door and is answered by a parrot.
