Independent Gilda is resigned fo a life of married tedium when Tom and George, having gotten past their jealousy, come to America and whisk Gilda away to live an exciting polyamorous life in Paris.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, director Ernst Lubitsch (1892–1947) wanted to cast Ronald Colman (1891–1958) and Leslie Howard (1893–1943) in the leading roles; however, Colman demanded too high a fee, and Howard had already played the role on Broadway and did not want to repeat himself. The director then approached Douglas Fairbanks Jr. (1909–2000) to play George, and while he agreed, he came down with the flu right before filming began, leading Gary Cooper (1901–1961) to be cast in the role. The role of Tom was given to Frederic March (1897–1975).
- Due to conversations and allusions to sexual themes, the film faced serious censorship problems, but eventually the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors Association gave it permission to be released.
