When a powerful secret defense system is stolen, James Bond is assigned to stop a Russian crime syndicate from using it.
What's left behind the scenes
- Under the guise of bourbon, Judi Dench drank apple juice with a few pieces of glass added instead of ice, while Pierce Brosnan's character drank iced tea instead of vodka martini.
- While the script was being developed, the producers believed that Timothy Dalton would return as Agent 007, and the character was written specifically with Dalton in mind.
- Anthony Hopkins was first on the list of candidates for the main villainous role.
- The first Bond film where the opening credits (where the viewer looks at James Bond through the barrel of a gun) were created using computer graphics.
- This was the first Bond film where the head of MI6 was played by a woman (Judi Dench). The idea to make 'M' a woman was proposed in 1985 by Lois Maxwell (1927-2007), who played Miss Moneypenny in the franchise films from 1962 to 1985. Director Martin Campbell was the first to put this idea into practice here.
