Short description

In 1920s New York City, a Black woman finds her world upended when her life becomes intertwined with a former childhood friend who's passing as white.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The novel by Nella Larsen, based on which this film was made, was written in 1929. The title of the film in English ("Passing") contains a reference to African Americans with a light enough skin color to be mistaken for white.
  • Director and screenwriter Rebecca Hall dreamed of making this film because of the mystery surrounding the identity of her own maternal grandfather. Her mother knew almost nothing about him because he died when she was very young, but rumors circulated that he had either Native American or African blood. Hall managed to find out that he was African.
  • It took Rebecca Hall 10 years to work on the screenplay. She wrote the first draft in 10 days, and spent the rest of the time revising and adding to it.
