After spending the night together on the eve of their college graduation, Dexter and Emma are shown each year on the same date to see where they are in their lives. They are sometimes together, and sometimes not.

- The film is based on David Nicholls' novel "One Day" (2009).
- After reading one of the first drafts of the script, Anne Hathaway liked the character of Emma so much that she flew to London to explain to director Lone Scherfig why she should get the role.
- David Nicholls was inspired to choose the date of July 15th by Billy Bragg's song "St. Swithun's Day", which he first heard in the 80s.
- The scene in which Dex and Emma swim naked is the only one in which actors Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess do not wear wigs.
- Emma Morley was reading Milan Kundera's "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" on the beach.
- In Edinburgh, where the graduation ceremony took place, it should be light at 6 p.m., as graduations fall in July.
