Short description
A Russian war correspondent is drafted into the war and finds himself in the middle of battle. When he loses his party card, however, he is treated as a deserter until he finds help from a kind man.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film's characters repeatedly mention the theme of repressions against the military command prior to the Great Patriotic War. In particular, the character played by Papanov mentions that he had been in prison.
- The prototype for Mishka Weinstein, the military photojournalist for Izvestia, was Mikhail Bernstein, a military photojournalist for Krasnaya Zvezda and a frontline friend of Konstantin Simonov, who died in May 1942 in the 'Barvenkovo Pocket'.
- In the preface to the 1976 edition of the trilogy 'The Living and the Dead,' Konstantin Simonov wrote about Papanov's role in shaping the image of General Serpilin: 'It so happened that Papanov played this role before I finished writing the final book. And he played it in such a way that, as I was completing the novel, I saw Serpilin exactly as Papanov had portrayed him.'
