Short description
Growing up in Greenville, Texas, Bart Millard suffers physical and emotional abuse at the hands of his father, Arthur. When Arthur becomes terminally ill, he finds redemption by embracing his faith and rediscovering his love for his son. Years later, Bart's troubled childhood and mended relationship with his dad inspires him to write the hit song "I Can Only Imagine" as singer of the Christian band MercyMe.
What's left behind the scenes
- Dennis Quaid's character was a defensive lineman on the high school football team. Quaid also played a defensive lineman in the drama "Any Given Sunday" (Oliver Stone, 1999). The photograph of Bart's father actually depicts Quaid in the black uniform from Stone's film.
- In one of the opening scenes, young Bart rides his bicycle through the city in 1985. He passes a movie theater with posters for "Jaws 3" (Joe Alves, 1983) and "The Goonies" (Richard Donner, 1985). Dennis Quaid, who plays Bart's father here, starred in "Jaws 3".
- The film was shot in Oklahoma City, particularly at the Civic Center Music Hall.
