Short description
Each year the population of sleepy Lake Victoria, Arizona explodes from 5,000 to 50,000 residents for the annual Spring Break celebration. But then, an earthquake opens an underwater chasm, releasing an enormous swarm of ancient Piranha that have been dormant for thousands of years, now with a taste for human flesh. This year, there's something more to worry about than the usual hangovers and complaints from locals, a new type of terror is about to be cut loose on Lake Victoria.
What's left behind the scenes
- In one of the scenes, Jake Forrester (Steve R. McQueen) says to his mother, "Mom, everything will be fine, we'll just sit and watch something, 'Jaws' (1975), for example." This reference is a tribute to Richard Dreyfuss, who starred in the 1975 film 'Jaws.' In 'Piranha,' the actor played Matt Boyd, a fisherman and the first victim of the bloodthirsty fish.
- American porn actress Gina played a cameo role in the film.
- Alexandre Aja planned to cast safety instructors Joe Dante (director of the original film) and James Cameron (director of the sequel) in cameo roles. Dante agreed, but Cameron turned out to be too busy.
- The film's premiere was originally scheduled for April 16, 2010, but was then postponed twice due to a protracted post-production process.
- When the shotgun runs out of ammunition, Deputy Sheriff Fallon (Ving Rhames) readily grabs a boat motor to shred the piranhas, completely forgetting about the .357 caliber revolver hanging from his belt.
