Short description
In the aftermath of World War II, a British colonel and his wife are assigned to live in Hamburg during the post-war reconstruction, but tensions arise with the German widower who lives with them.
What's left behind the scenes
- A body double was used in place of Keira Knightley for the nude scenes.
- Screenwriter Ridian Brook described the story of his father, who lived in Hamburg with his parents after the war. Ridian Brook's grandfather, Colonel Walter Brook, served in the British Army and helped the Germans rebuild the city after the Allied bombing raids. As shown in the film, Colonel Brook and his family settled in a house owned by Germans, who were not evicted and were allowed to continue living there. Over time, the two families became friends.
