Short description
The fascinating and tumultuous lives of Mikhail, Boris and Denis Kaufman (better known as Dziga Vertov) are the focus of this powerful documentary. Using rare archival footage from Russian state film archives and private collections, the brothers' lives and art are traced from Bialystok to Moscow, Paris, and Hollywood.
What's left behind the scenes
- When the STV studio suggested the director create a film about the filmmaker brothers, he not only immersed himself in the collections of the Gosfilfond of Russia but also began studying archives in France and the USA. Out of fifty hours of footage shot by Dziga Vertov, Tsymbal viewed forty-four. Not all of the materials found could be included in the film; for instance, a rare recording of Boris Kaufman receiving an Oscar was left out. These limitations were largely due to finances: the production team had to pay up to ten thousand dollars per minute for the use of American archival collections.
