Short description
Russian exiles in Paris plot to collect ten million pounds from the Bank of England by grooming a destitute, suicidal girl to pose as heir to the Russian throne. While Bounin is coaching her, he comes to believe that she is really Anastasia. In the end, the Empress must decide her claim.

- The film marked Ingrid Bergman's (1915-1982) return to the screen after she was blacklisted in Hollywood in 1949 for her affair with director Roberto Rossellini (1906-1977) and the birth of an illegitimate child.
- The plot of the film is based on the story of Anna Anderson (1896-1984), who claimed to be Grand Duchess Anastasia (1901-1918). It was established that Anna Anderson's handwriting was identical to that of the Grand Duchess, and experts found 17 similar features between her ear and Anastasia's. After Anna Anderson's death, it was revealed that her DNA did not match that of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (1921-2021), who was related to the Romanovs.
