Short description

A modern-day take on the "Beauty and the Beast" tale where a New York teen is transformed into a hideous monster in order to find true love.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was scheduled to premiere in July 2010; however, Vanessa Anne Hudgens convinced the distributors to push the premiere back by six months. The reason was simple: the film "The Other Side of the Dream" (The Other Christmas), starring her (now former) boyfriend Zac Efron, was being released at the same time. Vanessa did not want to steal fans away from her partner, which is why she took such drastic measures.
  • Zac Efron was considered for the role of Kyle.
  • While filming the movie, Neil Patrick Harris wore opaque contact lenses, which left him practically blind.
  • The film is based on the novel 'Beastly' (2007) by Alex Flynn, which was based on the fairy tale 'Beauty and the Beast' (La Belle et la Bête, 1757) by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont.
  • The rights to Alex Flynn's book were purchased by CBS back in December 2007. The adaptation was planned for release in late 2008, but production was halted due to the writers' strike.
  • Director Daniel Barnz wanted Robert Pattinson to play Kyle, but the actor was forced to decline due to an overly busy filming schedule.
  • The rights to Alex Flinn's book were purchased by CBS as early as December 2007, and the film adaptation was planned for release at the end of 2008, but production was halted due to the writers' strike.
  • The film was originally scheduled for release in July 2010, but Vanessa Anne Hudgens convinced the distributors to move the premiere forward by six months. The reason is simple – her (now ex-) boyfriend Zac Efron's film, "Charlie St. Cloud," was coming out at the same time. Vanessa didn't want to steal fans from her boyfriend, so she took extreme measures.
  • For the filming, Neil Patrick Harris wore impermeable contact lenses, which made him practically blind.
  • Director Daniel Barnes wanted Robert Pattinson to play Kyle, but the actor was forced to decline due to an overly demanding filming schedule for other projects.
  • The film is based on Alex Flinn's novel "Beastly" (2007), which in turn is based on Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont's fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast" (La Belle et la Bête, 1757).
