Short description

American tourist Frank meets mysterious British woman Elsie on the train to Venice. Romance seems to bud, but there's more to her than meets the eye.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Following the success of the 2006 film "The Lives of Others," director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck was entrusted with many decisions regarding casting and script details while working on this picture. However, as soon as filming began, control of the process shifted into the hands of the movie stars involved, and eventually, they began making almost all the decisions. When the director was asked why he decided to see the filming through to the end, he replied that he couldn't pass up the chance to film a movie with the two most beautiful actors in the world in the most beautiful locations on the planet.
  • Initially, Tom Cruise was supposed to play Frank, but he was replaced by Sam Worthington. Ultimately, due to "creative differences," Sam left the project, and the role was given to Johnny Depp.
  • Charlize Theron was originally supposed to play the role of Eliza.
  • Filming on boats through the Venetian canals took place over seven nights. To film this part of the movie, Jolie even learned how to operate several types of boats.
