Nate Foster, a young, idealistic FBI agent, goes undercover to take down a radical white supremacy terrorist group. For travel to filming locations in the business district of Hopewell, the film crew used a bicycle. After filming concluded, everyone who rode it, along with Daniel Radcliffe, signed it, and the bicycle was then ceremoniously gifted to the city. It was sold at auction for $2,000, with the proceeds donated to the local United Way Worldwide branch – the world's largest non-profit organization.
The film's original title, Imperium (Latin), is used in German to mean "empire" and is a synonym for the word "Reich" (but is not applied to the German Empire or the Third Reich). English-speaking neo-Nazis constantly talk about the Western Empire, meaning their future global empire.
The prototype for the main character is FBI agent Michael German.
Filming in Hopewell, Virginia, began on September 20, 2015, and ended on October 7, 2015.
