Short description

Convinced that his daughter has forgotten how to laugh, a father shows up unannounced while she's living abroad and bombards her with outrageous jokes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • As the screenwriter and director Maren Ade stated, one of the sources of inspiration in creating the image of Winfried Konradi with his peculiar humor was showman and revue artist Andy Kaufman (1949-1984).
  • Maren Ade filmed between 20 and 30 takes of each scene. If it was necessary to film the actors with several cameras simultaneously, the number of takes ranged from 40 to 60.
  • 120 hours of footage were shot during the 56 days of filming.
