What's left behind the scenes

As the screenwriter and director Maren Ade stated, one of the sources of inspiration in creating the image of Winfried Konradi with his peculiar humor was showman and revue artist Andy Kaufman (1949-1984).
Maren Ade filmed between 20 and 30 takes of each scene. If it was necessary to film the actors with several cameras simultaneously, the number of takes ranged from 40 to 60.
120 hours of footage were shot during the 56 days of filming.
As screenwriter and director Maren Ade explained, one of the sources of inspiration for the character of Winfried Conrad and his peculiar sense of humor was the showman and revue artist Andy Kaufman (1949-1984).
Deciding that she had not achieved the desired effect on set, Maren Ade discarded the footage from two days of continuous filming and reshot those scenes from scratch.
It took director Maren Ade more than a year to edit the film. During that time, she had a second child.
The film received extremely positive feedback at the 69th Cannes International Film Festival, but did not win any awards in the main competition.
