Short description

A young man comes to possess a supernatural notebook, the Death Note, that grants him the power to kill any person simply by writing down their name on the pages. He then decides to use the notebook to kill criminals and change the world, but an enigmatic detective attempts to track him down and end his reign of terror.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Like Rupert Sanders’ film 'Ghost in the Shell,' also based on a manga and released in 2017, the film was criticized for its creators' decision to cast American actors in the roles of Japanese characters and give them Western names. The film's authors stated that they had auditioned actors of Asian descent for the lead roles, but none of them had sufficient command of the English language. This explanation sparked a new wave of criticism.
  • Artin John was initially considered for the role of Agent Yang, but ultimately played the criminal Anthony Scumala.
  • The god of death, or Shinigami, was created using computer graphics in combination with motion capture technology. Jason Liles portrayed him in costume, and his performance was used to convey the character's movements on screen. Willem Dafoe provided the voice and facial expressions.
  • To get into character, Nat Wolff kept his own "death note."
