Short description

Five young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Josh Boone admitted that filming was not easy for him; he constantly felt as if his hands were tied because he had to soften the overall tone of the movie in every possible way.
  • The alien mutant Warlock was planned to appear in the film, and negotiations were underway with Sacha Baron Cohen for the role; however, it was decided that demonstrating the character's abilities would be too expensive, so he was removed from the plot with the intention of placing him in the second film of the trilogy.
  • The Essex Corporation is a reference to Nathaniel Essex, also known as Mr. Sinister, a supervillain from the Marvel Comics universe.
  • Josh Boone planned to make this film the first part of a trilogy, the second of which would tell about an alien invasion and an alien mutant nicknamed the Sorcerer, and the third part would be a horror film based on the “Inferno” event from the X-Men comics (demons invade Earth, and Magic plays a key role).
  • It was initially reported that Fox intended to reshoot numerous scenes to make the film scarier (a decision made based on test screenings). The reshoots were postponed several times until the idea was abandoned entirely in March 2020 after Disney acquired Fox. Reasons for canceling the reshoots vary. Some articles claimed that Disney found the film quite satisfactory, while others stated that director Josh Boone himself opposed the reshoots, arguing that the actors' appearances had changed so noticeably over the past two years that reshooting was out of the question.
  • Josh Boone planned for this movie to be the first part of a trilogy, with the second part focusing on an alien invasion and an alien mutant nicknamed Warlock, and the third part being a horror film based on the 'Inferno' event from the X-Men comics (where Earth is overrun by demons and Magik plays a key role).
