Short description

When Michèle, the CEO of a gaming software company, is attacked in her home by an unknown assailant, she refuses to let it alter her precisely ordered life. She manages crises involving family, all the while becoming engaged in a game of cat and mouse with her stalker.

Paul Verhoeven planned to film a cinematic version of the popular Dutch series 'The Secret Force' (1974); however, financial problems and the difficulties of organizing shoots in exotic corners of the world forced him to abandon the project and focus on the film 'Elle'.

The film was originally intended to be shot in the US; however, Paul Verhoeven encountered difficulties finding an actress for the lead role. Nicole Kidman, Sharon Stone, Julianne Moore, and Diane Lane all turned down the offer. For a while, Verhoeven wanted to cast Marion Cotillard or Carice van Houten. As the director himself recounted, almost every actress refused immediately after reading the script. Unable to find an actress in Hollywood, Verhoeven decided to move production to France. He noted that Isabelle Huppert read the novel and personally called the screenwriter and producer of the future film to say she wanted to act in it. According to Verhoeven, he felt that among all the American actresses, only Jennifer Jason Leigh possessed the courage to agree to the lead role.
Before starting filming, Paul Verhoeven took an intensive French language course to make communication with the crew and actors easier. He considered it necessary because French films are traditionally made only with French crews.
