Short description

In Imperial Russia, Anna, wife of the officer Karenin, goes to Moscow to visit her brother. On the way, she meets charming cavalry officer Vronsky, to whom she's immediately attracted— but in St. Petersburg’s high society, a relationship like this could destroy a woman’s reputation.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Vivien Leigh’s (1913-1967) dresses were made by Barbara Karinska (1886-1983) from sketches by the film’s artist Cecil Beaton (1904-1980). Wearing them caused the actress so much pain that she once thought she had broken her ribs and went to the doctor. Only then was it discovered that her assistant was putting her corsets on upside down.
