Short description

In 1968 California, a Marine officer's wife falls in love with a former high school classmate who suffered a paralyzing combat injury in the war.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Director Hal Ashby also appears in a small cameo in the film: in one episode, he drives a sports car and, while overtaking the main character's car, makes gestures to her.
  • A body double was used for Jane Fonda in the sex scenes.
  • The role of Luke was originally intended for Sylvester Stallone, but he, and then Jack Nicholson and Al Pacino, turned it down.
  • John Voight’s character is partly based on a real person: Ron Kovic, a paralyzed Vietnam War veteran who wrote the famous book “Born on the Fourth of July,” which Oliver Stone adapted into a film of the same name starring Tom Cruise in 1989.
