Short description

A group of academics have spent years shut up in a house working on the definitive encyclopedia. When one of them discovers that his entry on slang is hopelessly outdated, he ventures into the wide world to learn about the evolving language. Here he meets Sugarpuss O’Shea, a nightclub singer, who’s on top of all the slang—and, it just so happens, needs a place to stay.

Producer Samuel Goldwyn (1882-1974) promised Billy Wilder a $10,000 bonus if the film became a success. The film gained popularity immediately upon its release, and one day Wilder visited Goldwyn to ask for the promised payment. Goldwyn flew into a rage, shouting that he had never promised any such thing, and kicked Wilder out. That night, Goldwyn's wife woke up to find him pacing the bedroom. Goldwyn told her that he had just remembered he really had promised Wilder a $10,000 bonus. His wife asked what he intended to do now. "What choice do I have?" he replied. "I'll write him a check. For $5,000."
