Short description

A female blackmailer with a disfiguring facial scar meets a plastic surgeon who offers her the possibility of looking like a normal woman.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film's director, George Cukor (1899–1983), wanted Anna's monologue about her own life to sound tired and mechanical. To achieve this, he forced the actress playing the role, Joan Crawford (1905–1977), to repeat it over and over again until she became so bored that she delivered exactly the mechanical monotony he had intended. Only then did he give the command: 'Action!'
  • Greta Garbo (1905–1990) was originally intended for the role, but she had retired from cinema, and Joan Crawford was cast instead.
