Short description

The residents of a suburban high-rise apartment building are infected by parasites that turn them into mindless nymphomaniac fiends.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The full version of the film has a runtime of 89 minutes.
  • Susan Petri couldn't manage to cry, so director and screenwriter David Cronenberg had to resort to using onions. The actress did start to cry, but the scene had to be scrapped due to equipment problems. The onions were no longer available on set, and the actress allowed Cronenberg to slap her. He hit her until her entire face went numb. Barbara Steele, another actress involved in the scene, wasn't warned about anything and assumed Cronenberg was seriously hitting the actress. After filming, she firmly demanded an explanation from Cronenberg, which she received.
  • According to Lynn Laurie, the shoulder her character stabs with a fork was Cronenberg's shoulder. He had a soft pad placed under his shirt, which was supposed to be hit, but Laurie missed and drove the fork directly into the director.
  • Susan Pitti was unable to cry, so director and screenwriter David Cronenberg had to resort to using an onion. The actress did start to tear up, but due to equipment problems, the filmed scene had to be scrapped. There were no more onions on set, and the actress allowed Cronenberg to slap her in the face. He hit her until her entire face went numb. Barbara Steele, another actress in the scene, was not warned and thought Cronenberg was seriously beating the actress. After filming ended, she resolutely demanded an explanation from Cronenberg, which she received.
  • According to Lynn Lowry, the shoulder her character stabs with a fork belonged to Cronenberg. A soft pad had been placed under his shirt as the intended target, but Lowry missed and drove the fork directly into the director.
