Short description

Hired to helm an Americanized take on a British play, director Lloyd Fellowes does his best to control an eccentric group of stage actors. With a star actress quickly passing her prime, a male lead with no confidence, and a bit actor that's rarely sober, chaos ensues in the lead up to a Broadway premiere.

What's left behind the scenes

A significant portion of the dialogue was borrowed from Michael Frayn's play (who is credited as the screenwriter), but many of the words were changed to make the film more accessible to American audiences.
This was the final role for Denholm Elliott (who played Seldon). Michael Caine agreed to appear in the film as Lloyd Fellowes only on the condition that Elliott would be his co-star. Caine and Elliott had known each other since filming Lewis Gilbert's comedy 'Alfie' (1966). Elliott had confessed to Caine that he had AIDS and didn't have long to live. Because of this, Caine insisted on Elliott's inclusion in the cast, understanding that it would be his last chance to earn some money. Elliott passed away a few months after the film's release.
