What's left behind the scenes

  • Director Jerry Zucker always gives his mother a cameo role in every one of his films. Here, she played a bank employee.
  • Another actress was originally planned for the role of Oda Mae Brown, but Patrick Swayze, a great admirer of Whoopi Goldberg's talent, managed to convince the producers that an African American actress was the best candidate to play her.
  • Demi Moore was cast as Molly Jensen because she could easily cry when required by the script.
  • The terrifying screams of the 'demons' are actually children's screams played back at a slowed-down speed.
  • Actress Molly Ringwald auditioned for the role of Molly.
  • The musical 'Ghost,' based on the film, premiered in 2011.
  • As it happened, Bruce Joel Rubin saw an interview with Patrick Swayze that left a huge impression on the screenwriter. When asked about his father, the actor welled up with tears. Bruce offered Swayze the lead role, but the director objected; it was only after a brilliant screen test that the question of casting the main character was settled.
  • Bruce Willis turned down the lead role, believing that the film would inevitably fail at the box office.
