Short description

Young orphan Heathcliff is adopted by the wealthy Earnshaw family and moves into their estate, Wuthering Heights. Soon, the new resident falls for his compassionate foster sister, Cathy. The two share a remarkable bond that seems unbreakable until Cathy, feeling the pressure of social convention, suppresses her feelings and marries Edgar Linton, a man of means who befits her stature. Heathcliff vows to win her back.

The film was titled 'Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë' (Emily Brontë, 1818-1848) because the Samuel Goldwyn Co. threatened to sue Paramount Pictures, as they held the rights to the title 'Wuthering Heights' following William Wyler's (1902-1981) 1939 adaptation. Samuel Goldwyn (1882-1974) was even permitted to fine Paramount Pictures $2,500 every time they failed, for any reason, to include Brontë's name in the film's title.
Ralph Fiennes himself insisted on including a scene in the film where Heathcliff beats his head against a tree trunk, longing for Cathy. Moreover, he hit his head against the tree so hard that he drew blood.
