Short description

When the boss' unlucky daughter is missing in South America, Campana is sent to watch the boss' most unlucky employee who is sent as a private detective in hopes he can duplicate the daughter's mistakes.

Before this film, Pierre Richard had already played a character named François Perrin in "The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe" (1972), "Return of the Tall Blond Man" (1974), and "The Toy" (1976) – his first joint project with Francis Veber.
Mexican actor Sergio Calderón, who played the role of a prisoner in the film, also played the role of a bartender in the 1991 American remake.
Director Francis Veber used the names of the classic characters Perrin and Campana—roles played by Pierre Richard and Gérard Depardieu in a series of French comedies—for the characters played by Jean Reno and Patrick Bruel in his comedy "The Jaguar."
Prior to this film, Pierre Richard had already played a character named François Perrin in 'The Tall Blond Man with Yellow Shoes' (1972), 'The Return of the Tall Blond' (1974), and 'The Toy' (1976)—his first collaboration with Francis Veber.
Most of the Mexican actors in the film did not speak any French. They delivered their lines in Spanish, and during editing, their characters were dubbed by French actors.
Mexican actor Jorge Luke, who plays the bandit Juan Lárbal in the film, appears as the police chief in another French comedy filmed in Mexico – “Revenge of the Feathered Serpent” (1984).

In 1991, an American remake of the film, titled 'Pure Luck', was directed by Nadia Tess. Francis Veber, who attended the filming as a consultant, encountered 'American-style political correctness' for the first time. As in the original, Veber wanted to cast a Latin American actor for the role of the villain, as he found him to be the most talented, but this idea had to be abandoned. Nadia Tess explained that portraying a negative character with a Mexican actor could anger the Latin American community. This story inspired Veber to create the comedy 'The Chameleon' (2001), again starring Depardieu.
During filming, Gérard Depardieu was stung by a scorpion.
In 1981, the film became the top box office hit in France, surpassing such hits as 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' and 'The Professional'.
Initially, the roles of Campana and Perren were to be played by Lino Ventura and Jacques Villeret, respectively, but Ventura refused to appear in a film with Villeret. Additionally, the actor was unable to reach an agreement with the film's producer, Alain Poire, regarding the amount of his fee.
The scene with the wasp was very difficult for Pierre Richard. Despite the stinger having been removed, no one on the crew suspected that the wasp could still bite. The actor had to perform the scene while enduring the insect's bites.
