Short description

TV cameraman Harry Hinkle is injured while filming a football game. Seeing big dollar signs, his unscrupulous ambulance-chasing lawyer brother-in-law Willie Gingrich enters the picture, and convinces Harry to overstate his injuries and claim $1 million in pain and suffering. Harry's similarly-minded ex-wife suddenly reappears in an attempt to rekindle their relationship.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The idea for the film came to Billy Wilder (1906-2002) when he saw a player bump into the camera operator on the sidelines during a football match.
  • Work on the film had to be interrupted for several weeks when Walter Matthau (1920-2000) suffered a seizure. By the time he recovered, he had lost 15 kilograms, and to hide this, he was forced to continue filming wearing a cloak.
