Short description

After a band of drunken thugs overruns a small Indian Nation town, killing Reverend Goodnight and raping the women folk, Eula Goodnight enlists the aid of US Marshal Cogburn to hunt them down and bring her father's killers to justice.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Initially, John Wayne wanted Ingrid Bergman to be his on-screen partner. Later, he stated that the female lead should be younger and suggested Mary Tyler Moore for the role, as he decided that audiences would unlikely appreciate a film with two elderly characters in the lead roles.
  • Plans were initially conceived to make a third film about Rooster Cogburn, which would have been titled 'Once Upon a Time'. These plans were abandoned because the film did not entirely meet expectations; furthermore, Paramount Pictures cited John Wayne's age and a general decline in public interest in the Western genre as reasons for the cancellation.

  • While teaching his eight-year-old daughter to play golf during the filming of this movie, John Wayne suffered an injury, but fortunately, it was concealed with an eye patch. Wayne had been living with only one lung for ten years prior to filming, so breathing at that altitude was difficult for him, and he often required an oxygen mask.
