Short description

An acclaimed writer, his ex-wife, and their teenaged children come to terms with the complexities of love in all its forms over the course of one tumultuous year.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The story about Rusty that Sam sends to Stephen King is an adaptation of the lyrics from the song 'I've Just Seen a Face' (The Beatles, 1965). Rusty claims that every time he sees Kate, he remembers this song. The story itself begins with Rusty's words: 'I remember it hurt. It hurt to look at her.'
  • The film mentions the following famous writers (or characters read their books): Flannery O'Connor (1925-1964), Richard Ford (b. 1944), Joan Didion (b. 1934), Stephen King (b. 1947), and Raymond Carver (1938-1988).

  • At the beginning of the film, Erika, played by Jennifer Connelly, is reading “Blue Nights” (2011) by Joan Didion, a memoir about the author’s daughter’s death. By this point, Erika has already lost her own daughter, Sam, played by Lily Collins.
  • Samantha, played by Lily Collins, wrote a piece titled 'Under the Pink'—which is the name of a 1994 album by Tori Amos.
  • When Bill asks Sam, “How’s Louie doing?”, she replies, “What Louie?”. She is, at that moment, reading Ed Brubaker comics, which Louie adores (as he mentions in one of the earlier scenes of the film).
