- Robert Zemeckis was originally intended to direct the film, but after about a year of working on the project, he was replaced by Ron Howard. The director later explained his departure by saying that he showed the studio executives a work-in-progress version of his other project, 'Romancing the Stone' (1984), which made a very negative impression on them and, in the opinion of many, was doomed to fail.
