Short description

As the son of a Viking leader on the cusp of manhood, shy Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III faces a rite of passage: he must kill a dragon to prove his warrior mettle. But after downing a feared dragon, he realizes that he no longer wants to destroy it, and instead befriends the beast – which he names Toothless – much to the chagrin of his warrior father.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In the cartoon, Stoick says "those damn creatures still won't give up!", "lead us home, devil!", and "the abyss will open!" These concepts did not exist among pagan Vikings; they only appeared with the advent of Christianity.
  • Cressida Cowell's book did not feature Astrid the warrior girl, but the directors and screenwriters decided that a vibrant female character was essential. Additionally, one of the twins, Tuffnut and Ruffnut, was changed to female for the movie.
  • The film is based on the first books from Cressida Cowell's "How to Train Your Dragon" series (2003-2012).
